Just yesterday our good friend Vance Savage posted a note on his Facebook page. The note included his opinions on famous magicians and selling out to fame. Check out what Vance had to say! You click “continue reading” to view the whole story!
I was speaking with my friend from England here on Facebook about magicians.
We both follow everyone and what they are doing. I enjoy it. Magicians are kind of odd in the case that one always feels they have to be top dog. It’s the same with the fans-there is one great one and that is all. I find a sort of elitist community with many magicians. It’s like the movie The Prestige – they are always worried someone is going to steal their thunder or “big up” on them or – God forbid, figure out and steal one or more of their tricks. I really don’t worry about any of that. Maybe because my career has just begun, but I really don’t feel the need to be elitist and protective over my art or standing in the magic community. I love magic..I adore it..steal my tricks, it’s flattery.
Anyway, my friend was pointing out some magicians who are legends amongst the magic community and how he believes many of them “sold out”. How so? He said it was great to have money and fame but when the money means more and the magicians are strictly all about the money then they were garbage to him. He mentioned one in particular and I mentioned another. We compared notes.
If you haven’t seen my posts on Twitter or Facebook by now, you must know that I am doing a show for The Children’s Hospital at Albany MedicalCenter on August 2nd. Yes, this is great in itself, but what is more sprectacular is the fact that Criss Angel sent 30 magic kits to be given to the kids after my shows. Brad Christian from www.ellusionist.com sent 25 of their custom decks. I asked and they gave.
I think it’s great that someone like Criss Angel who has millions and so famous cares so much about his fans and the less fortunate. I always hear about Criss giving to this or that organization. The guy has a big heart and truly cares. Sure other magicians give too but not nearly as much as Criss. Criss sponsored my gig…I mean how cool is that? Here is a guy who isn’t even going to be there who wanted to put a smile on those kids faces and open their life to magic. Wow! We need more people like this. Criss gives and gives. The guy always has me impressed from what he does on stage, on TV and in his personal life.
I contacted a couple of other HUGE magicians. Contacted their management too. Yes, I even spoke with one directly and he ignored me…concerning this show and donating for the children. Shame…man has millions. The other too and they didn’t want to be inlvoved. All I would have asked for is a few decks or posters…they could have written it off in their taxes.
So talking to this friend tonight…it just kind of disheartened me to a couple of these guys. What a shame. They could have still gave an asked their name not to be associated with mine if that were the case…but wow.
Thank God for magicians like Criss Angel and Brad Christian….who care about the less fortunate and love to be involved no matter what.
Thanks, guys! You are my heroes!
